The effect of cognitive dissonance on human tendency to recycle plastic : An experimental study about behavior, attitude and environmental impact (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether cognitive dissonance leads to a higher tendency to recycle more plastics. The study was based on an experimental design with one control group and one experimental group to investigate the effect of a cognitive dissonance intervention on the dependent variables behavior and attitude. The independent variables were group and measurement period. The factors' subjective norm and external conditions might have an impact on behavioral changes, therefore these were used as covariates. Data collection took place through three surveys and one logbook. 22 participants answered all the questionnaires that aimed to measure the participants' attitudes and behaviors related to the recycling of plastics. Only the nine participants in the experimental group received an intervention where they were instructed to write a logbook about their recycling of plastics and make a public statement telling why they recycled plastics. This was to make them aware of their behavior and attitude around recycling plastics to create more cognitive dissonance. The results showed that there was a significant effect of measurement period with behavior as the dependent variable in the experimental group. This means that the experimental group has increased its recycling of plastics over time. There was no significant change in attitude regardless of group. The result also showed that no covariate had a significant effect on the result. Conclusions that can be drawn are thus that it is possible to change behaviors regarding recycling plastics through cognitive dissonance.
