Education as a gender equality goal to reduce exposure of violence against women : Is there a correlation between the development of the average level of education of the population and women's exposure to violence in Sweden's police regions between the years 2000–2020? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The European Commission reports on increased violence against women as a result of pandemic restrictions taken in 2020 and believes that there has been an escalation of intimate partner violence. Intimate partner violence is more widespread in the Nordic countries, even though the Nordic countries are also known for having a high level of equality between men and women. This paradox has been called "the Nordic paradox". Education is a high-priority gender equality indicator and the fact that Nordic women would experience more violence is therefore a paradoxical reality. Since the level of education is constantly increasing for the population in Sweden, according to political goals and previous research, violence against women should be reduced at the same time. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between violence against women and levels of education in Sweden's police regions and to study whether any change has taken place between the years 2019–2020, which was the year of the pandemic. The investigation of the correlation is done through statistical tests presented in the results part of this study. The results of this study show that women's exposure to violence increases at the same time as the number of highly educated people also increases, which leads to the conclusion that the level of education does not reduce exposure to violence among women.
