Who quits in organized sports? (English)
Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of the study was to investigate who quits in organized sports, where the more specific purpose was to find out the main reasons and at which age people quit sports. The question formulations in the work was at which age do people quit organized sports, the most common causes to why people quit, the difference between foreign-born and domestic-born and the impact that socio-economy has on people leaving organized sports.

In the literature review we focused on previous research that is linked to the subject, where the major cause is to investigate the reasons why people drop out of sports and at what age most of them choose to quit. Other parts that are included are strategy 2025, organized sports, immigrants in organized sports and socio-economic status.

Our method used for the study was a survey investigation, the survey consisted of eleven questions and was created in Survey and report. The data was collected by making a convenience selection, where we targeted people that had left organized sports. The data that came in was then analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and compared to previous research.

The main results from our survey showed that most people quit sports in their teens and that the most common causes for dropping out from sports are other interests and lack of motivation. When the respondents had to state the main reasons why they dropped out of sports, it was that their friends had a big impact, new interests emerged, injuries, took too much time, lack of motivation and that they experienced some kind of pressure. The foreign-born stated that the main reason to drop out was that the interest disappeared, friends quitted, lower level of training and lack of friends. We could not take any conclusions on how socioeconomic status was connected to people quitting sports
