"Let´s talk about psychedelics" : A Qualitative Study of Psychotherapists Experience of Integration Therapy (English)
Abstract [en]

The interest of psychedelics has expanded. Studies of Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has shown evidence of therapeutic potential, which might make more people inclined to look for the psychedelic experience in an illegal context. The use of psychedelics can be risky, especially in an uncontrolled setting and the psychedelic user may need professional care after an overwhelming experience. Today, there are therapists in Sweden working with integration therapy for patients with psychedelic experiences. The aim of the study was to explore the psychotherapists experience of integration therapy for patients with previous psychedelic experiences. The data was collected with semi structured interviews and analyzed with the qualitative method thematic analysis. Five themes were generated: Psychedelics - a complicated field, Risks and possibilities, Need for relational processing, Therapeutic focus during integration, An intense road to the core. The findings indicate that integration therapy can be a complicated field and that there is a need for a wider conversation about psychedelics. The user usually has a need to process the psychedelic experience with another, trustful person. Integration with a therapist is necessary when the experience has been very difficult, when there is mental illness and/or if the person lacks that trusting friend to talk to. The findings are theoretically anchored in the transtheoretical model of Harm Reduction and Integration, research on the therapeutic alliance and therapy methods with focus on affect, among others Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy
