Classical ideals in contemporary product aesthetics : An analysis of the company H&M's appropriation of Venus de Milo and David (English)
Abstract [en]

This study is an analysis of how the company H&M has used appropriation as a tool in the creation of two vases that emulate the apperance of two classical artworks: Venus de Milo and David by Michelangelo. This study is based in appropriation theory using a hermeneutic method. The result of this study shows how stylistic ideals from ancient Greek continues to have an impact on contemporary commercial demand, as well as how these stylistic ideals collaborate with contemporary taste in the creation of the vases by H&M. The company has created a product that cater to contemporary taste while still visibly maintaining critical aspects of the original statues, which this study concludes is appropriation. The study also discuss similarities in display of the vases and the original statues, where the study finds that stylistic ideals and the ideal of the antique white has an inpact on both, despite the objects differences in both time and usages.
