Differences in the surrounding landscape of road verges with and without garden lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl.) : A comparison of landscape composition and configuration in GIS (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The spread of invasive alien species, which pose a great threat to the biodiversity of plants, depends on human land-use and the structure of the landscape, amongst other things. Garden lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl.) is an invasive alien species that is widespread along many road verges in Sweden. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the landscape, in respect of its composition and configuration, differs between road verges with and without garden lupine. For this ten study sites on road verges with and ten study sites on road verges without garden lupine was used. The surrounding landscape within a radius of 200 meter of every study site was digitized from orthophotos in GIS and classified as one of eight land-cover types. The distance from each study site to the closest patch of each land-cover class as well as the proportion of each land-cover class in the surrounding landscape was analysed. The results showed that study sites with garden lupine were located approximately three times closer to infrastructure and were surrounded by six times as much of the same. Residential properties (including gardens) and “other disturbed areas” composed a greater part of the landscape around sites with garden lupine. Other disturbed areas were also far more common in the surrounding landscape of sites with garden lupine and were also located much closer to them compared to sites without the species. Forest was both the only land-cover class that was located closer to sites without garden lupine and the only one that covered a greater part of the landscape surrounding sites without the species, compared to those with it. In total, forests constituted 80 % of the surrounding landscape of road verges without garden lupine, compared to 43 % of the landscape around sites with it. In conclusion there was a difference in the surrounding landscape, which could be valuable to have knowledge about and use in certain conservation efforts. Landscape structure analysis could, for instance, be helpful in assessing the risk for future invasion of garden lupine to vulnerable habitats.
