Does rumination and expressive suppression lead to social anxiety in adolescent youth? : A retrospective longitudinal study with data from the ‘Three Town Study’ (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Social anxiety increases dramatically during adolescence and often results in much suffering. Interpersonal stress, rumination and expressive suppression are also increasing during this age on a population level. Earlier studies have found how two affect regulation strategies, namely rumination and expressive suppression, are associated with social anxiety. The purpose of this study is to examine if these two strategies, with main focus on rumination, acts as important links between interpersonal stressors and development of social anxiety. The hypothesis is building on a reasoning about how rumination is increasing the potential for maladaptive learning to occur from negative social experiences. The examined sample includes a cohort of 1884 students (46% girls, 54% boys) from three cities in Sweden where longitudinal data was gathered on three occasions over three years. Mediation analysis showed how rumination to some extent mediates the relationship from interpersonal stressors, at home and with peers, towards symptoms of social anxiety. In contrast no mediation effect was found with expressive suppression. In the discussion it’s argued how the result underscores the importance for both staff and adults who engage with youth with symptoms of social anxiety, to also ask them about how they tend to handle problems, and specifically about rumination. Finally, more studies are encouraged about the association between rumination and social anxiety, and studies that examine if interventions for rumination can prevent development of social anxiety in adolescents and teenagers.
