Social studies, a subject that benefits from good socio-economics? : A quantitative survey study of upper secondary students' grades in social studies in relation to their socio-economics, based on social-, economic-, cultural- and symbolic capital (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to discover a correlation or lack-of correlation between grades received in social studies for upper secondary students and their sociology-economic background. The experience of students in social studies according to their socio-economic background was also evaluated. When beginning the essay, Pierre Bourdieu´s theory of social-, economic-, cultural-, and symbolic capital was reviewed. In short, it is a theory of a humans total socio-economics capital based on various aspects. Data was collected throught a quantitative analysis, done throught distribution of a questionnaire for students in their third year of upper secondary school. The students answered this questionnaire anonymously; following the General Data Protection Regulation, based on their personal experiences through the online forum, google forms. 56 responses were collected. The questionnaire was then analyzed through the program, IBM SPSS Statistics. 

The analysis resulted in significant correlation between socio-economic background and social studies grades in upper secondary school students. A correlation between all of Bourdieu´s forms of capital was also reported. However, the analyses did not result in a significant correlation between students socio-economic background and favorite area in social studies, but a majority of respondents favored sociology. Previous research reports, students with high socioeconomic background often continue studies in university, along with an increase in dickson of labor leading to greater societal wealth gaps. Furthermore, the importance of everyone becoming involved in community life is highlighted to address this problem. This essay brings clarity to the different forms of socio-economic background´s effect on students´grades in school, along with the preferred interests of students in social studies.

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med denna uppsats var att upptäcka en korrelation eller brist på korrelation mellan elevers betyg i samhällskunskap på gymnasiet i förhållande till deras socioekonomiska bakgrund. Men även att ta reda om studenter uppfattande olika saker som intressant inom samhällskunskap utifrån derassocioekonomi. Jag har använt mig av Pierre Bourdieus teori om socialt-, ekonomiskt-, kulturellt- och symboliskt kapital. Kortfattat är det en teori om människors totala socioekonomiska kapital baserat på olika aspekter. Data samlandes in genom en kvantitativ analys, där jag utformade enkätfrågor som elever som gick tredje året på gymnasiet fick besvara. Eleverna besvarade detta frågeformulär anonymt; efter den allmänna dataskyddsförordningen GDPR. Svaren var baserade på elevernas personliga erfarenheter som genomfördes via onlineforumet, google-formulär. 56 svar samlades in. Frågeformuläret analyserades sedan genom programmet IBM SPSS Statistics. 

Analysen resulterade i en signifikant korrelation mellan socioekonomisk bakgrund och betyg i samhällskunskap hos gymnasieelever. Ett samband mellan alla Bourdieus kapitalformer synligggjordes också. Analysen resulterade inte i något signifikant samband mellan elevernas socioekonomiska bakgrund och intresseområde i samhällskunskap, men en majoritet av respondenterna var främst intresserade av sociologi. Tidigare forskning tyder också på att studenter med god socioekonomisk bakgrund oftare fortsätter med studier på universitetet, det visar också att den ökande arbetsfördelningen har lett till större luckor i vårt samhälle och lyfter fram vikten av att alla engagerar sig i vårt samhällsliv. Denna uppsats klargör de olika formerna av socioekonomisk bakgrundseffekt på elevernas betyg i samhällskunskap, tillsammans med elevernas intresseområden i samhällskunskap.
