Systematic investigations are a part that students must develop in the natureoriented
subject and a significant portion of that must be laboratory work.
When the students execute the practical part of education that is laboratory
work, they get to be “scientists for a day”, which creates an interest in the subject
and the scientific methods. The purpose of this study is to describe laboratory
work in biology education in grades 1-3, from the teachers’ perspective.
A survey study was conducted in which active teachers who teach biology as
respondents, it was designed with both fixed and open response alternatives
and thus the survey is both qualitative and quantitative. The results show that
the teachers carry out laboratory work in biology with their students and that
they all focus on human experiences. Laboratory work about animals and
plants are also frequent. The teachers believe that it is important for the students
to develop conceptual understanding and are with the help of images
given good conditions to understand concepts. Students should find laboratory
work interesting and have the ability to handle equipment such as loupe, magnifying
glass, and microscopes. The teachers that have access to the material
from “NTA”, opine that it gives better conditions for laboratory work. The
conclusion is that laboratory work is rewarding for the students as they get to
utilize senses that make it easier for them to remember. Recommendations
aimed at teachers are to continue to dare to do laboratory work in order for the
students to be able to develop systematic investigations.
