The inside out : A quantitative cross-sectional study on mentalization during the psychology programme (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Mentalization refers to the ability to “hold mind in mind”, to have insight into what oneself and others are feeling, thinking, and why. Research shows that our ability to mentalize is of importance to us when it comes to our psychological well-being and how our relationships form. Mentalization as a research field tends to be patient focused, but according to us it is just as important to examine the ability in psychologists and psychotherapists. This is a quantitative cross-sectional study, aiming to investigate if the ability to mentalize differs between psychology students that are in the beginning versus in the end of their studies. In total 329 respondents were included through a digital survey with the self-assessment form RFQ–8. The result indicates that the psychology students in the fifth and final year partially had a more genuine mentalization compared to the students in the first year. The difference we found between the students can not be explained by Sex, but partly by Age. Based on our interpretation of the results and previous research, we argue that the result of this study could mean that it is the psychology programme that contributed to the students in the fifth year having a more genuine mentalization. Further research and replication is necessary to strengthen the findings of this study. For instance, it would also be interesting to investigate how the different universities affect the results. Within this study, it is not possible to draw any causal conclusions about what has caused the differences in mentalization. However, the results indicate that it is the number of years studied on the psychology programme in Sweden that accounts for the differences.
