The purpose of the study is to analyse how the implementation of the Agile MethodologyScrum in the healthcare project in the public sector compeers to an implementation accordingto the guidelines of Scrum. How does it differ and how much is it possible to implement theagile methodology in this specific kind of projects?
In order to be able to observe how a project team works with the scrum method and agileproject planning, the study looks closely into a one, yet fairly big project in the health sectorthat is managed by the region Västra Götaland. The project public documents, membersparticipating in the project sourced our information and knowledge about the implementationstage in the project.
The research work aimed mainly at answering the research questions: what are the benefits toimplementing the Scrum Method in the public healthcare sector? And To which extent is itpossible to implement the Scrum Method in the public healthcare sector? The study has been carried out as a literature and user focused study, in which the user is aproject member in the healthcare division in the public sector.
The study began with a literature study to find information about the Scrum Method, itsimplementation methods and the usage of Scrum in the healthcare industry. As a result, achecklist was created with all the major events and artefacts that are crucial forimplementation.
The checklist was later used at the interviews conducted with project members about theimplementation process of the scrum method. It helped to assess the challenges and theobstacles they faced during the process.
The analysis of the interviews shows that the scrum method could enable new health practicesin the healthcare field, as it allows care to be more adaptive and open to new knowledge, itimproves care processes to deliver more value to the end user (whether it will be a medicalstaff or patients), and more effectively implement new technologies to improve the care oftheir patients. At the same time, it could make it smoother to manage many of the highprioritized challenges the healthcare industry is facing now all around the world.
The conclusion to the research is that working with a method like scrum that enables moreflexibility, receptiveness to change and room for creative opportunities only brings benefits tothe healthcare organization, regardless of the extent, the project team can implement themethod.
That says, since the present research looked only into one project in the field, it is importantto take the research a step further and extend it to a bigger number of projects to analysepossible moderating effect of the size of the project, its complexity and its context.
