I Sverige finns ett unikt föreningsliv som byggts upp av ett ideellt engagemang. Näst intill 90 procent av alla barn och ungdomar har under sin uppväxt varit medlemmar i en idrottsförening. Idrottsrörelsen har därmed ett betydande ansvar att se till att verksamheten drivs på ett bra sätt. Tidigare forskning gällande hur organisationer arbetar och styr sin verksamhet har främst riktat sig mot vinstdrivande organisationer. Vad som skiljer vinstdrivande företag från ideella organisationer är verksamhetens ändamål. Det är därför möjligt att ideella organisationer har en annan syn och ett annat syfte med verksamhetens styrning. Få tidigare studier har undersökt tillväxten av ideella organisationers sociala nätverk och hur de påverkar driften av verksamheten. Syftet med studien är att förstå hur ideella idrottsorganisationer bedriver, styr ochkontrollerar sin verksamhet. För att besvara syftet har teorier kring organisationers relationer och deras ekonomiska styrmedel, såsom mål, budget och strategier använts. Studien bygger på en kvalitativ forskningsansats, bestående av åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer. Det empiriska materialet innefattar hur styrelsemedlemmar och anställda inomde åtta idrottsföreningarna upplever att föreningarna bedrivs, styrs och kontrolleras. Studien visar att idrottsföreningar styrs utifrån verksamhetens mål, samt att de använder olika strategier för att uppnå målen. Fortsatt visar studien att samtliga föreningar styrs utifrån budget och kontrolleras genom budgetuppföljningar. Studien indikerar att benchmarking förekommer inom ideella idrottsföreningar, men anses inte vara ett grundläggande verktyg för att styra verksamheten. Studien visar vidare att ideella idrottsföreningars relationer påverkar hur verksamheten bedrivs. Föreningarna gynnas av goda relationer och det ses som en nyckelresurs i verksamheten. Relationerna är avgörande för att föreningarna ska kunna finansieras. Relationerna kan ha både positiva och negativa följder, vilket påverkar hur verksamheten styrs och kontrolleras.

In Sweden, there is a unique tradition of associations that is built on voluntary commitment. Almost 90 percent of all children and youth have been part of a sports association during their childhood. Thereby the sports movement has a significant responsibility to ensure that the business is run well. Previous research on how organizations work and manage their operations has primarily focused on profit-making organizations. The purpose of the business is what distinguishes profit-making companies from non-profit organizations. It is possible that non-profit organizations have a different view and a different purpose on how to control the business. Few previous studies have examined the growth of non-profit organizations' social networks and how they affect the operation of the business. The purpose of the study is to understand how non-profit sports associations conduct their businesses. To respond to the purpose, theories about organizations' relationships and their financial instruments such as goals, budgets, strategies and benchmarking have been used. The study is based on a qualitative research approach, consisting of eight semi-structured interviews. The empirical material includes how board members and employees within the eight associations experience how they are governed and controlled. The study presents that sports associations are governed by the goals of the organizations and that different strategies are used to achieve the goals. Furthermore, the study presents that all associations are governed on the basis of budget and controlled by budget monitoring. The study indicates that benchmarking is used within non-profit sports associations, however it is not considered as a basic tool for managing the business. Further, the study presents that the relationships of non-profit sports associations affect how the business is conducted. The relationships are favorable for the associations and it is seen as a key resource. In addition, relationships are crucial for the associations in order to finance themselves. Relationships can have both positive and negative consequences, which affect how the business is managed and controlled.
