Woodwind instruments student – an endangered species? : A survey study about the Swedish music schools way of working with recruitment of students to woodwind instruments. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to highlight when and how woodwind teachers recruit students; what they think about recruitment; and to investigate the number of residents in a municipality has any effect on the recruitment process of woodwind instrument students to Swedish music schools. In the second chapter, historical aspects of music schools; the purpose of music schools; and how the interest of playing an instrument appears for students will be addressed, to gain a better understanding of the workings of music schools in Sweden as they are today. No previous research on the recruitment of students for woodwind instruments has been found, but subjects such as the choice of instrument and recruitment methods in other countries has been found and are relevant for this study. This quantitative study was executed through a web survey that was sent to a selection of the population of woodwind instrument teachers. The results that emerge from the survey are connected to the research questions, but because of the selection and missing values it is not possible to draw any general conclusions for the entire population. The results showed some popular recruitment methods and some difficulties in the recruiment process. This is partly confirmed in previous research and is discussed in the last chapter together with aspects of: similarities, differences and possible connections between results.
