Episodic memory performance in Parkinson’s disease:Measured with Buschke’s selective reminding procedure (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects cognitive functioning and many times leads to episodic memory deficits, which leaves a noticeable impact in everyday life. The field is in need of more studies that further maps degree and specificity of the deficits. The aim of the present study was to examine whether there is a difference in episodic memory performance between PD-patients and healthy controls, measured with Buschke’s selective reminding procedure. PD-patients (n=33) were compared to a group of healthy controls (n=10) with regard to several measures of episodic memory such as free recall, storage/retrieval from long-term memory, short-term memory retrieval, list learning/random retrieval from long-term memory, and delayed recall, where it was assumed that the long-term memory measures required more self-initiated processing. The result was analyzed with mixed ANOVA and showed that PD-patients performed significantly worse than controls on all measures, except short-term memory retrieval. In conclusion PD-patients perform worse on tasks with higher demands on self- initiated processing, and that they benefit from cues in terms of reminders.
