Abstract [en]
Negative or difficult inner experiences are common feature in many different psychological problems, such as in depression and anxiety disorders. However, positive inner experiences, such as feeling satisfaction about one’s life, has shown be a protective factor in psychological well-being. The current study used experience sampling method (ESM) to explore momentary satisfaction with behaviour (i.e. what one has done recently) and difficult inner experiences in relation to psychological distress, life satisfaction, psychological flexibility and valued living. In addition, the study investigated whether satisfaction with behaviour moderates the relation between difficult inner experiences and psychological distress. A sample of 45 participants who were signed up to courses at Karlstad University completed momentary assessments over the period of one week by using mobile phone app and answered online surveys before and after the ESM assessment. Difficult inner experiences and satisfaction with behaviour was associated with symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress as well as life satisfaction, psychological flexibility and progress and obstruction in valued living. The variability of satisfaction with behaviour was associated with lower levels of psychological flexibility and higher obstruction in valued living. Satisfaction with behaviour moderated the relation between difficult experiences and general psychological distress and anxiety, but not between difficult inner experiences and stress or depression. Thus, momentary difficult inner experiences had less impact on psychological distress and anxiety for individuals who were more satisfied with their behaviour. Results suggest that satisfaction with behaviour is a protective factor in psychological well-being and that acting in accordance with values may be an important factor defining how satisfied one is.
