Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to analyze students’ motivation in the subject of English in the Swedish upper secondary school, and to find out if there is a correlation between students’ self reported motivation and their grades. The study is based on an online questionnaire of students in a Swedish upper secondary school regarding motivation and grades. The results showed that the type of motivation with the strongest presence was extrinsic motivation. The study also showed that there was a positive correlation between grades and intrinsic motivation, no correlation at all between grades and extrinsic motivation, and finally a negative correlation between grades and amotivation.

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med denna undersökning var att analysera elevers motivation i ämnet engelska i det svenska gymnasiet och att hitta en koppling mellan elevers upplevda motivation och deras betyg i ämnet engelska. Denna undersökning är baserad på en enkätundersökning gjord med gymnasieelever gällande motivation och betyg. Resultatet i denna studie visade att motivationstypen som hade starkast närvaro bland eleverna var yttre motivation. Studien visade även att det fanns en positiv korrelation mellan betyg och inre motivation, ingen korrelation alls mellan betyg och yttre motivation och slutligen fanns det en negativ korrelation mellan betyg och amotivation.
