Well-behaved homestead owners : Worker’s ideals and paternalism in Hagfors Homestead association 1935-1970 (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to research the homestead movement in Hagfors during the period 1935 to 1970. The work is based on the worker’s ideals such as the ideal of good character. That is – the model of being a sober, well behaved, educated person, which spread in the working class in Sweden during the end of the 19th century. The essay will analyse whether this ideal was imbued in the homestead association in Hagfors or not. Furthermore, the work will analyse the paternalism that was left in the old industrial communities in Sweden and where the paternalistic role moved after the old, almost feudal in character, estate owner more or less disappeared. The work has been demarcated to the period 1935 to 1970 because the association was founded in 1935 and it is furthermore relevant to end the work at the start of the 1970s since the homestead movement then more or less ended after the social democratic party and government of Sweden launched what is known as the “million program” in 1965.

The paternalistic role of the homestead association meant the spreading of the model of good character, which saturated not only the education, but what the members were educated in. The nurturing and self- service activities almost go hand in hand. The conditions for obtaining a housing loan (“egnahemslån”) in Värmland were formulated in such a way that the ideal of good character permeates the requirements and therefore this led to an obvious incorporation of the ideal in the associations operations. The paternalistic role that had previously been at Uddeholmsbolaget, the previous estate owner of the old industrial community, was thus taken over by the private home association for some time.

Key words: Ideals in the working class, homestead, own home, paternalism, Swedish industrial communities, welfare states.
