Caruso and I : A self-study in continuous practice (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is, under a set period of time, to analyse the learning process and effect of continuous practice on the musical instrument trumpet. During this period I used a specific practice method called “The Caruso Method”. The references of this study are based on previous literature and research dealing with various aspects of musical practice as well as design theory. The observational methods used in the study for documenting the practicing process included the writing of a logbook and video recordings. In the results, different semiotic resources are presented that has been used in the practicing of the method. These include among others the trumpet, foot stamps, a metronome as well as a playbook and a smart tablet which contained the sheet music for the various exercises of the method. Also, in the results, the learning process through the different phases during the time period was presented. Beyond the improved playing technique the practice had given, I also developed a self-reflecting side of myself which improved my self-insight as well as an insight into my general playing technique. In the discussion, the results are both supported and problematized using the previous literature and research on musical practice and design theory. The discussions include among other things the lack of a teacher who gives feedback during the learning process as well as multimodal aspects of following the method.
