Jazz or classical teaching? : A comparative study on the significance of drum teachers genre orientation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore if and how qualified percussion teachers concider their different genre orientations affect their teaching of students in the Swedish music and culture school[1]. The study also aims to determine if and which other factors these teachers concider to affect their teaching. The study has its starting point in the research questions Which genre related factors does qualified percussion teachers concider to affect their pedagogic choices in ther work with students in the Swedish music and culture school?, as well as What other factors, if any, do these teachers concider to affect their pedagogic choices? Five university trained percussion teachers with jazz and classical orientations, active as teachers in the Swedish music and culture school, has been interviewed through semi-structured interviews regarding their views on elements of education, taken from the Swedish education plan for music in the Swedish gymnasium[2], Instrument or singing 1. The teachers have been shown a video of a student performing exercises. The teachers have then made individual plans for the student based on this video, which has functioned as a prompt for the interviews. The results are divided into the headers The teachers’ views on the prompt subject where the teachers’ plans for the student from the prompt material are displayed, The teachers’ genre orientations where the teachers’ view on the elements of education are compared focusing on their different genre orientations, and finally The reality of the student where other interesting factors affecting the teachers’ teaching are brought to attention. The study closes with discussions including the results in relation to previous research and presented literature.
