"We do what we can" : A study about social workers job regarding abused women. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to contribute with a greater understanding of social workers opinions and experience regarding their need of knowledge in the field of working with female victims of domestic violence. To achieve the purpose of the study we have used a qualitative method of investigation. Six practicing social workers were interviewed with using a semi-structured interview guide. The social workers were practicing in both public and nonprofit agencies, which gave us a broader view of the phenomena of inquiry. The interview material were transcribed and thereafter analyzed with the help of a qualitative content analysis. For a deeper understanding of the data the material was then analyzed using the theoretical concepts of SOC (Sense of Coherence) and discretion. It appeared that social workers’ experience of need of knowledge varies between public employed social workers, as for example in social services, and nonprofit employed social workers. The result showed that experience and years in the profession are important prerequisites for the level of confidence and self-assurance that a social worker may feel in the workplace. Another finding from the investigation showed that social workers employed in nonprofit organizations held a greater level of self confidence in their knowledge over those that worked in the public sector. The conclusion of the study found that social workers’ need of knowledge in the area working with abused women is dependent on the experience and years in the profession, and additionally dependent on the social worker is employed by public organization or in a ideological nonprofit organization.
