Conversations about children’s own artworks from a preschool teacher perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gather knowledge about how preschool teachers talk to children about the children’s own drawings. The purpose and the questions at issue is made from a phenomenological perspective on learning, this means that it´s the preschool teachers experience of the phenomenon of conversing with the children about their pictures that is going to be examined. The Phenomenographic method is used as an onset to analyse the collected data. This is going to be done through the seven steps described by Dahlgren & Johansson (2015), where you start with reducing the quotes from the interviews down to smaller sections which then are sorted into categories based on differences and similarities in what the preschool teachers are answering to the questions.

The results from this study shows that preschool teachers use conversations about the children’s drawings to observe the process that the children go through while doing unrestricted artworks initiated by themselves. This leads to this study’s conclusion that the process and conversionary part of it can from the preschool teacher’s point of view lead to higher competence in verbal abilities and a higher level of communication skills. Other competences mentioned that is believed to be won through communicating about the children’s artworks is a sense of self-worth and to develop higher motor skills. The only esthetical competence that is mentioned in the interviews as being able to develop from communication about the children’s own artworks is the ability to imagine. This may be a sign of that preschool teachers feel unsure about what the aesthetic competences may be and what meaning these have for the sake of children’s development.
