The Moomin Park Debate : A Conflict of Culture (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to describe the debate regarding the establishment of a Moominthemed amusement park and to relate it to conflicts typical for culture politics. The impact the establishment of this park may or may not have on Karlstad will be a focal point of this essay, especially regarding the potential effects and problems of tourism. To do this, a number of documents and articles relating to the debate and the theme park will be analysed to see in just what way they resonate with such questions. The conclusions derived from this essay is that the debate and the processes of the theme park’s establishment does indeed relate to conflicts regarding cultural heritage, tourism and the use of culture for regional development. The debate in and of itself is driven by values representative of different aspects of culture politics, such as questions of cultural heritage and regional development.
