Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim was to illuminate what motivates prediabetic patients for lifestyle change. Method: A systematic review was performed according to the method by SBU (2014). Scientific articles were searched in the databases of PubMed and CINAHL. Twelve articles were chosen and were reviewed for quality in line with the review templates from SBU. The articles were analyzed as stated in Granheim and Lundman’s (2004) method for qualitative content analysis. Result: Three categories emerged: education, supportive relationships and achivable goals. The patients were in need of a lot of education on their diagnosis and advice what could be done for the disease not to progress to type 2 diabetes. They felt great support from family, friends, healthcare personal and co-patients. Small, achievable goals could motivate patients to perform a lifestyle change. A strong determination not to develop diabetes and staying well for loved ones were other factors motivating patients. Conclusion: Every patient needs adjusted counselling individually from where they are, to what perceptions and barriers there exists. Care must be taken to the patient’s psychosocial environment, his or her interests and unique conditions. The patient needs to be supported to set up his or her own goals for change and evaluate these. The patient’s social relations needs to be supported.
