The question about abortion : An analysis of the arguments from the State puplic reports about abortion 1944, 1971 and 1989 (English)
Abstract [en]
The abortion as a political question has differed in the history. Initially, abortion was prohibited under the state power, and today abortion is allowed within certain limits. This essay focuses on analyzing the arguments for and against abortion in the Swedish State public reports and how they have changed between 1944-1989. The method used is a qualitative content analysis and the essay takes a biopolitical perspective for a greater understanding of the changes in the arguments over time. As primary sources, three of the Swedish State public reports has been used. Since they are public documents, they are available to everyone and they are also digitized.
The results coincide with the previous research. The conclusion of the essay demonstrates a number of arguments both for and against abortion and that these have differed depending on which time being studied. Abortion was regarded as a societal problem that posed a threat to a steady population level. Arguments about woman´s own responsibility and ability for rational thinking later took its´s place in the abortion debate, to finally also include the rights of the fetus. A connection can also be discerned between changes in the arguments about abortion and a change in biopolitics, which has hone from controlling the population and its reproducion, to an increased right to self-determination in women and parents.
