Put out fire with gasoline : An experimental study about the effects of ethnic framing in news media (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Based on a Sweden where xenophobia and support for Sverigedemokraterna, Sweden's only right-wing party, have increased in recent years, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of framing ethnicities in news media. Initially, the essay focuses on studying whether the framing on ethnicities affects what kind of feelings and attitudes people have towards a crime. Subsequently, the study aims to investigate whether individual factors such as gender, age, education, political position, news consumption and interest in criminal journalism have significance for the recipients' opinions.

The theoretical framework that has been the basis of the study is framing theory and the effects of framing theory, together with previous research in the fields of framing ethnicity minorities and immigration in the news media. Statistics from the SOM-institute which highlights increased resistance to immigration in Sweden in recent years have also been used in the execution of this essay.

The study has a quantitative approach and a web-based experiment with an associated survey has been used as a method. 98 respondents were divided into two groups, where they were each assigned a text about a crime where the only difference was that one text mentioned the perpetrator`s ethnicity as foreign, while the other text did not mention any information or details regarding the perpetrator`s ethnicity at all. Subsequently, the participants were asked to answer a survey consisting of a total of 25 questions. The population that the study wanted to investigate was Swedish citizens.

The results of the study showed that the respondents were influenced by the perpetrators' ethnicity. This indicates that the news media's negative image of immigrants has an effect on the media audience. Among other things, respondents felt stronger negative feelings, such as anger and fear, when the perpetrators' ethnicity was mentioned. On the other hand, it was clear that the respondents considered that the crime was more serious when the perpetrators' ethnicity was not mentioned. The results also showed that the respondents' individual factors moderated the effect of framing in news media. Male respondents and those with lower educational levels were most affected by the perpetrators' ethnicity.
