The Religious Art : A study semiotic of protestant church art in Karlstad (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper is based in the reality that religious traditions adapt their religious sites to conform according to theological notions. Within the frame of this paper, Protestant churches in the central district of Karlstad is examined. The source material mainly consists of photographs, as well as some printed information sheets and informal conversations during the photography process itself. The photos are studied with a visual semiotic method and explained with the aid of a social semiotic theory. The theory and method are interdisciplinary, which is why previous research is used to explain theological phenomena. The results of this thesis show that there are major differences between the churches studied. The biggest difference consists of the differing amount of art, but also what is expressed through it, and how it is expressed. Examples of this are the difference in the use of abstract and iconic (realistic/naturalistic) elements, as well as whether ideas or narratives are conveyed trough the art. These differences also affect how visitors and members are expected to behave and feel.
