The purpose of the essay has been to investigate how students perceive controversial issues. It has also been about how they perceive that their teachers have handled these issues and where they draw their boundaries when it comes to tolerating sensitive issues. This has been done by interviewing twelve students and then their interviews have been analyzed on the basis of three different analysis tools. The results showed that controversial issues were perceived by most students as topics that affect one on a personal level and can deal with things that are perceived as sensitive as one's own beliefs and values. The results also showed that most students want controversial questions in civics education as long as it is structured in a way that does not exceed their own subjective tolerance limit or violate anyone else's.
