Children’s actions based on the design activities with insects in preschool : An observation study of how small children’s exploration, participation and interaction is affected by how educators introduce and design activities around bugs (English)
Abstract [en]

This observational study examines how the participation, interaction and exploration of young children is influenced by how activities are introduced and designed in preschool activities. This study is based on two different activities, which show two different approaches where both activities have a natural science starting point with the theme of small bugs and insects. The first activity took place in the preschool’s indoor environment with the help of a reading tablet and the second activity took place in the outdoor environment outside the preschool. The data is collected through observations and the children who participate in the study are 1-3 years old. Seven observations were conducted, four with the reading tablet in the indoor environment and three in the outdoor environment outside the preschool.

The results show that generally more types of interaction occur in the activity with the reading tablet in the indoor environment, than in the activity in the outdoor environment. This is probably because the reading tablet gathers the children and makes them interact with each other. The result also shows more types of exploration in the outdoor environment activity. The reason for this could be that they are out in the "real" environment with actual bugs and insects.
