Masculinity in Young Adult Literature : A study of Aidan Chambers book The Toll Bridge (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay treats the subject of how masculinity and its norms are represented in Young Adult literature. This study focuses on Aidan Chambers book The Toll Bridge (1992) that discuss identity development, ideals and sexuality. The purpose of the analysis is to present and put awareness to why it’s important to show different ideals of masculinity in young Adult literature and analyse how Chambers book represent this. Earlier research shows that masculinity is a relative unexplored field, especially where the male characters express themselves outside the ordinary norms.

The book-study shows that Chambers work treats norm-critical aspects through the protagonist Jan who has more typical feminine features like being considerate, emotional and unsure about himself. The analysis also shows that the females sometimes are represented a bit stereotyped but in the same time the main female character, Tess, shows a lot of variety in her personality and breaks the norm of whom the other characters might show. Therefore, the book foremost shows individual diversity than stereotyped gender-individuals.
