Therefore, she must be hidden : A critical discourse analysis of the muslim veil in the media discourse (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse the portrayal of the muslim veil in the media discourse. By utilizing a critical discourse analysis method, and with the help of post-colonial, oriental and critical feminist theory, I have analysed the occurring discourses that surround this phenomenon found in two major Swedish newspapers over the course of six months, with the overarching aim to detect islamophobic predispositions. To this end and on the basis of Faircloughs critical discourse analysis method, I designed a coding scheme to map out any underlying ideologies and power structures that can be identified. I conclude that though the discourses on the muslim veil are of varying character, they are predominantly negative and show distinctive Islamophobic traits rooted in feminist as well as colonial conceptions.
