Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sustainability is an important topic and prior research indicates that the consumption level must decrease. Clothing companies have an important role in the sustainable development. There is a pressure from the society for these companies to decrease their environmental impact. The purpose of the study is to contribute to an increased understanding of how management control, in a sustainable perspective, is used in the clothing industry. The study also intends to examine how companies in the clothing industry manage their employees at the operational level towards sustainable performance. Reward systems and cultural control are the control systems that are described in the study. By adopting the store employees´ perspective in the clothing industry, a gap from prior studies can be reduced. In order to achieve the purpose of the study nine qualitative interviews have been made together with a document study. The conclusions made by the study indicate that there are opportunities for further improvements regarding how the employees are included in the work towards sustainability. The result shows the difficulty of balancing the sustainable performance with the sales targets set by the clothing companies. Furthermore, it can be established that the employees are to some extent included in the work with sustainability and contribute to a sustainable store. For example, by contributing to reduced sales of plastic bags and informing customers of the companies' use of sustainable materials. One further conclusion is that the use of reward systems and cultural control can be given an additional focus in terms of sustainable issues. Regarding rewards, the companies could take advantage by encourage sustainable performance with non-monetary rewards. The organizational culture can be considered strong regarding to the employees' attitudes towards the disposal of complaints together with paper and plastic waste. One conclusion is though that the respondents experience lack of time regarding the sustainability performance and the companies could therefore focus more on a sustainability-oriented organizational culture.
