The father figures in children's literature : A study of how the father figure is presented in five different children's books (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to analyze five children's books while at the same time examining how the father figure is presented from a gender perspective, focusing on stereotypes, doing gender and masculinity. Each of the five books that were analyzed were written in different time periods. The study analyzes book covers, specific characters and the environments. The selection of books is based on the common factor that each book had a prominent father figure that plays a central part in each of the books. The overall analysis is carried out by using close reading and using tools that are linked to each character, where different concepts are described as male and female, paratexts and a mimetic vision is being used. The results of the study show that stereotypical roles occur in both old and new children's literature. Also, that both norms and stereotypical roles are often challenged in these books. Gender role similarities in the five books are nevertheless made visible, yet can be displayed in many different ways. The result also shows that the text analyzes can be used in a norm-critical teaching context.
