Gender and gender stereotypes in children’s literature : How boys and girls are represented in four selected children’s books (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how boys and girls are represented in some selected children’s books and to examine to which extent the characters follow traditional gender stereotypes. This has been examined by analysing four mystery books or detective books for children aged nine to twelve from different decades, which all contain at least one male and one female main character. The analyses have been done from a gender perspective in which the characters representation and their relationship to traditional gender stereotypes that can be found in children’s literature have been in focus. The different analyses show that all books contain examples of gender stereotypes that are being followed, but they also contain gender stereotypes that are being challenged and broken. This regardless of the decade the books were published. For example, both boys and girls in the selected books have been portrayed as nurturing and caring, a role that is usually held by the female characters. The analyses have also shown that both the male and the female characters have been involved in solving the different mysteries the characters have faced.
