“It’s the way you are" : Mothers’ representation in four children’s books (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to analyze, from a gender perspective, how mothers are represented in four selected books from different eras of Swedish authors, in order to see if and how society's values are reflected in the stories. In the study, close reading has been used as a method, where both women and men have been analyzed as each other's counter poles. In support of the analysis, with the aim of function as compliment to each other, two analysis schemes for masculine and feminine character traits have been used, partly Maria Nikolajeva's analysis schedule for masculine and feminine character traits and partly Yvonne Hirdman's first law of masculinity, according which men and women are defined as each oth-er’s opposites. Common to these schemes is that the man is superior to the woman. The result shows that two of the books reproduce stereotypical gender roles where the man is seen as the superior to the woman while the other two challenge the values and norms of the society to some extent by opposing the social ideal of that time for how to be and act as a woman and as a man.
