Reading aloud in primary education : A study on teachers´approaches to reading fiction aloud (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse the approaches teachers in the lower grades have to reading fiction aloud in class. The main question addressed in the study is why and how teachers use reading aloud as a pedagogical method in their teaching? The empirical data consist of four qualitative semi-structured interviews. The teachers that are interviewed work at different schools, and differ in both age and work experience. The theoretical framework is a socio-cultural perspective. In line with this perspective the main idea is that learning through reading fiction is made possible in interaction between individuals in a social context. The results of the study show that all teachers read fiction on almost a daily basis and regard reading aloud as an important part of language development. The result also shows that the different approaches that the teachers apply is connected to time. The time accessible to reading aloud and the time the different teachers’ use to talking, discussing and working with the book. Furthermore, the result also showed that the teachers choose fiction that reflect their own interest and experience.
