Love and loss : The role of attachment on perceived satisfaction in a romantic relationship and level of distress during a separation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper aimed to study the association between different patterns of attachment and the quality of romantic relationships, as well as the experienced level of distress at a separation. The study also wanted to investigate the relationship between well-being and patterns of attachment. 155 individuals responded to four questionnaires. The questionnaires used were the Attachment Style Index(ASI), Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI), Distress Index (DI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). Correlations showed that people with ambivalent attachment pattern experienced their relationships significantly worse and experienced significantly more distress, both in intensity and recovery time, after the end of the relationship. The two insecurely attached groups gained a higher score on HAD than the securely attached group. Future recommendations are given to the staff at school and other professions having regular contacts with families. If they are aware of children's attachment specific behaviors efforts can be introduced early, such as, for example, family counseling or individual therapy.
