Swedish grammar in teacher education : The role of teacher education for grammar teaching in elementary school (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to highlight the importance of grammar education in Swedish language teaching in elementary schools and how this is dealt with in teacher education. It is an exploration of how teacher students are exposed to didactic training in this field and how they, as trainees, experience their own teacher education.

This study consists of a quantitative survey conducted amongst teacher students with regards to their knowledge of grammar, their perception of grammar teaching and their own experience of being taught grammar as teacher students. The second part of this study is a document study of the syllabuses for Swedish courses for teacher students, in which twenty syllabuses have been systematically researched with reference how grammar is introduced. 

The results show that teacher training students appear to receive good training in grammar as a subject, according to their own answers in the survey. Contrary to this they do not believe they receive enough didactic training in the same field, which could be due to a lack of academic research in terms of grammar didactics in general, proving that there are not enough critical theories in this field for teacher students to adhere to in their training.

Detta arbete syftar till att belysa grammatikundervisningens roll i svenskämnet i grundskolan ur ett didaktiskt perspektiv genom att undersöka hur grammatik behandlas i lärarutbildningen. Det är en undersökning om hur lärarstudenterna blir undervisade i grammatik och hur de upplever detta.

Studien består av en kvantitativ enkätundersökning till lärarstudenter där deras upplevelser om grammatikundervisningen och dess roll i lärarutbildningen studeras. Den andra delen av arbetet består av en kartläggande dokumentundersökning där kursplaner för svenskkurser för grundlärare i årskurs 4-6 i universiteten/högskolor i Sverige studeras systematiskt.

Resultatet visar att lärarstudenterna får gedigen undervisning i grammatiska ämneskunskaper men att det saknas tydlig undervisning i grammatikdidaktik som når lärarstudenterna i de universiteten/högskolor som erbjuder grundlärarutbildning. Detta kan vara en konsekvens av att det generellt sett är brist på vetenskaplig forskning om grammatikdidaktik och därmed har inte högskolorna tillräckligt med teorier som lärarstudenterna kan ansluta sig till.
