The mystery with gender norms : An analysis of the most lent fiction of 2017 for the ages 6-9 years from a gender perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

We have a society that strives for gender equality while distributing every characteristic and interest in the different compartment of the sexes. The purpose of this study was to investigate how gender norms of the different sexes are communicated in the most borrowed books in 2017.

The theoretical starting points were theories of gender and its influence in fiction. From the theories, concepts such as gender, genus and gender order were used in the first place. Based on the aim, the choice of method became a qualitative method, more specifically a literature analysis, which involved analysing and reviewing the five most lent books. Delimitations were drawn on a yearly basis, which gave me a top list, partly a local demarcation, but also the most lent books for a certain age span, 6-9 years. In the result, we see that the protagonists are often described breaking the standard, while the minor characters mostly follow the norm for their gender. There were occasions where patterns were broken even by the minor characters, but it was not appreciated by the surroundings.
