The purpose of this study has been to examine the development design in educational materials in the subject history for students in lower secondary school. The Holocaust was chosen as a clearly defined subject since it is very well documented in the Swedish curriculum. A selection of different digital educational materials were examined through comparative method. To be able to measure the effect of the digitalization, the study used an international standard for measuring the degree of impact on educational materials named SAMR which stands for substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition. However, in the study the Swedish translation EUMO was used. The study found that digital educational materials have had quite an impact on the possibilities of how pupils interact with the historic educational material today. But even if some educational publishers are very likeminded, there are also differences in their materials. Some common themes are the interactive parts with hyperlinked words and quizzes that give instant feedback. In addition to this some of the publishers had made room for more personal stories or current big news in their exercises. The study indicates that due to the wider span of educational material today thanks to digitalization, it’s more important than ever for teachers to spend time searching after good educational material for the future to come.
