The critical care nurse’s perception of handover : A phenomenographic study (English)
Abstract [en]

Introduction: Nursing handover is under research because it is considered to be associated with patient safety. Aim: To describe variations in conceptions of nursing handover for critical care nurses. Method: Phenomenographic study using interviews. Results: Five descriptive categories were identified: Communication. Opportunity for learning. Patient centered information as a ground for continued care through a process. Transferring of responsibility. Patient safety and quality of care. Nursing handover is conceived as varying qualitatively both individually and collectively.  Conclusion: The aim of nursing handover is conceived to be transmission of responsibility. The execution of the report is conceived to be a part of a process similar to the caring process. The handover is an opportunity for learning and affects the quality of care and patient safety. Nursing handover is performed through communication. There is potential for improvement with regards to nursing handover in the clinical praxis, but further research is needed.
