Preschool teachers’ thoughts about science in preschool : Approach, conceptual use and early work with science (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to examine the thoughts that preschool teachers have about the inclusion of science, and what significance they think it has for children’s development in preschool activities. To investigate this, I chose to work with an interview method. My interviews were conducted with eight preschool teachers, with half of them worked with children in the age of 1-3 years, and the other half of them worked with children in the age of 4-5 years. This is to find out how the work with science is depending on the age of the children and to find out if there were any differences between the preschools. All preschools were located in the same municipality. The results show that preschool teachers see natural sciences as an important topic to include in preschool. They also highlight the importance of considering the children’s own interests. However, the result show that there are factors that can make it difficult to integrate science into the preschool, such as lack of time, environment and the teacher’s own self-confidence in his/her competence. Several preschool teachers mention that science is around the corner of the outdoor environment, but in order to work with natural sciences, planning is needed. Some interviewed preschool teachers say they do not have the time and, in part, the ability to do it.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka de tankar som förskollärare har om inkludering av naturvetenskap, samt vilken betydelse de anser att det har för barns utveckling i förskolans verksamhet. För att undersöka detta valde jag att arbeta med en intervjumetod. Mina intervjuer genomfördes med åtta förskollärare, varav hälften arbetade med barn i åldern 1–3 år och den andra hälften arbetade med barn i åldern 4–5 år. Detta för att undersöka hur arbetet med naturvetenskap är beroende på barnens ålder samt ta reda på om det fanns några skillnader mellan förskolorna. Alla förskolor var belägna i samma kommun. Resultatet visar att pedagogerna ser naturvetenskap som ett viktigt ämne att inkludera i förskolan. De lyfter även vikten i att beakta barnens egna intressen. Resultatet visar att det finns faktorer som gör det svårare att integrera naturvetenskapen i verksamheten, så som tidsbrist, miljö och pedagogens eget självförtroende till sin kompetens. Ett flertal pedagoger nämner att naturvetenskapen finns runt hörnet i utomhusmiljön men för att arbeta med naturvetenskap inomhus behövs planering. Några av de intervjuade förskollärarna uttrycker att de inte har tiden och till viss del kompetensen till att göra det.
