Abstract [en]

Worker cooperatives, organizations owned and governed by the members who work in them, can be more or less constructed as resistance to neoliberal capitalism by these members. I have studied a marketing campaign that promotes cooperatives, and the discourse analysis shows that resistance to neoliberal capitalism is being constructed in the campaign, but it should be understood as non-critical resistance since the dominant discourse of neoliberal capitalism is simultaneously being reproduced. This highlights the risk that discursive articulations of resistance may simultaneously reproduce the dominant discourses that is being resisted. A similar intertwinement of discursive constructions of resistance and power is being produced by co-op members in their descriptions about their co-ops in research interviews. In my interviews with members of five worker co-ops in Sweden, the co-operators articulate resistance to hierarchical power in traditional wage-labour, and instead emphasis their creation democracy and freedom to decide for oneself in the co-ops. However, the co-operators simultaneously construct a collective, self-disciplinary power within the co-ops, with informal circulation of power amongst some subject positions according to experience, knowledge and interaction style. This initial analysis points to the intertwinement of resistance and power in discursive articulations of co-ops as resistance.
