"I would prefer the extra work, rather than a dead body. That is something that I do not want on my conscience" : A qualitative study of a socialworker's feelings in the work of LVM (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The aim is to study how the social worker perceives the work on LVM legislation based on emotions in relation to the client. Which is answered by the questions; what feelings with the social worker arise in the work of LVM legislation, how does the social worker's feelings affect the relationship with the client and how does the social worker handle the feelings. It is a qualitative study with six semistructured interviews. Interviews are conducted in two municipalities with socialworker who work with the exercise of authority against people with addiction or addiction problems. The analysis was conducted using Hochschild's theory, which is the theoretical reference frame of the study. The result is that respondents do not think that LVM meets the client's needs but that it is a necessary measure to save an individual's life. In this connection, it appears that the respondents experience uncertainty with the ambiguities experienced by the law. In addition, there is concern about the proposed decision whether LVM will affect the relationship with the client. Respondents are restrictive to show the client their feelings as they take a professional role to support and motivate the client. This is important in maintaining a good relationship where the client's feelings are in focus. At the same time, there are feelings in the meeting with the client, respondents choose to deal with the emotions at a later stage, often with support in supervision, with colleagues and/or their boss.
