This examination paper is about students’ views on what characterises a good teacher. The aim of the paper is to understand what characterises a good teacher and see if there are any differences and/or similarities between boys’ and girls’ views on this subject. What characterises a good teacher, according to the students? Do boys and girls have the same opinion on this or do their views differ? In order to answer these questions I have given a questionnaire to three classes of students in grade eight. I have also studied literature in this field of interest. The results show that a good teacher should have numerous different qualities, for example competence, humour, intelligence, a good all-round knowledge, and he/she should be honest, fair, reliable, understanding, patient, devoted, cheerful and unambiguous. A good teacher should also give credit and show respect. There are not really any differences between boys’ and girls’ opinions on this. But it is worth mentioning that the girls’ answers were more homogenous than the boys’ answers. Keywords: examination paper, 2005, teacher, student.
