Losing a close friend or relative is a very difficult experience for a child. This is a time when they need our support and help. School is an important aspect of a child´s life; it provides support and understanding to help the child process their grief in the best possible environment. The child will have a difficult road ahead and the way in which he/she is treated and the methods applied to process the grief will have a significant impact on the rest of the child´s life. It is therefore extremely important that the teachers are competent in handling children faced with such crises. My objective in this study is to gain a broader understanding of crisis management in preschool and elementary school and to learn the most favourable method of helping the child/children during their grief. I will look for answers to the following questions: How should a grief stricken child be treated? How can the staff prepare themselves for crisis situations? How should the communication flow between the preschool/ elementary school and the child´s home be managed? I have used literature, a Rädda Barnen magazine, and a crisis management binder (support material for preschool/elementary school staff). I also made comparisons between these sources. The crisis management binder doesn´t direct it self much towards the preschool while the literature brings up a whole lot of information about the younger children. Keywords: crisis management, grief, process the grief.
