To Use Literature In School - A Study of Methods To Motivate Pupils To Read Literature In School The purpose of this degree project is to investigate teaching methods to motivate students to read literature in school. My study is based on interviews with two upper secondary school teachers and two secondary school teachers. The result of my study shows that the teachers I have interviewed read a great deal to keep up to date with the literature their students read. This is important because the teachers’ choice of literature to read in school affects the student’s motivation. It is also important that teachers discuss with their students about the literature they read, in order to be able to recommend literature for further reading. My study shows that teachers can motivate their students by being devoted readers themselves, and also by presenting the literature in an inspiring manner. The same goes for the students, because a student can by showing interest in a certain book inspire and motivate other students to read the book. Furthermore, the teachers that I have interviewed almost exclusively use contemporary literature, because they believe that the students find it easier to identify themselves with contemporary texts. But, my study shows that classic literature can be meaningful by using teaching methods as Five-minute writing and guiding. Moreover, it is important to discuss the literature in class because the students get an opportunity to learn about what other students think, believe and feel about the common read literature, in order to deepen their understanding of the texts. Finally, my study shows that methods like writing assignments or connecting the literature to a theme can be useful to create a meaningful reading of literature in school and therefore work as motivating factors for the students.
