Utomhuspedagogik i år 5 - skolor i stadsmiljö
2005 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The subject of this report is outdoor education. The purpose with my study is to see if outdoor education utilises in fifth grade. It is also to examine under which circumstances teachers take advantage of outdoor education if at all. This study also takes a closer look at teachers and students perceptions of outdoor education. The study has been carried out within a residential environment whilst taking comparisons from a similar study based on rural environments. The examination includes interviews with three teachers and fifteen students from the aforementioned teacher’s classes. The research represents the viewpoint that all schools utilise outdoor education, but they use it in different extent. This study shows three things that make teachers use outdoor education, their educational background, their individual interest for outdoor education and, the level of resources available in the schools. The geographical environment is not shown to be making any significant difference to the amount of outdoor education found in school either. The rural school was shown as not having more outdoor education time than the residential school. That which was shown is that both students and teachers have a positive view with regards to outdoor education and they think it is necessary in school. Outdoor education is a good complement to traditional classroom teaching. It develops the students’ senses, increases their social and personal skills, and lastly, is good for student health. Key Words: nature, residential environment, outdoor education, fifth grade.
