This paper deals with the complex of problems connected to the tests that pupils meet in mathematics at school. Upper secondary school class possible needs of alternative forms of test are studied, on the basis of different perspectives, by means of a questionnaire. The result shows, despite the general positive attitude towards mathematics in the class, that there is a need of increased variation, higher involvement and that the teacher should make more distinctions what he /she includes in the marks in mathematics. You can also find that there is a strong wish from the pupils that not only one single test occasion decides as much as it does now. The conclusion of the investigation is that alternative tests, that could be a solution of the problems mentioned above, should be given a chance. On the basis of the results and the conclusion I’ll present a proposal on how to design an alternative form of test, which can be applied in mathematics at upper secondary school. This project is also based on the research that is shown thorough in the first part of the work, together with pertinent regulations in curriculum for upper secondary school.
