Romer i skolan - romska föräldrars syn på den svenska skolan
2005 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

According to Swedish law schooling for all children is compulsory. The law prescribes that it is the parents or the guardians who are responsible that the children fulfil that obligation. In Sweden there are about 20 000 roma origin and a great number of these are children. Not until the beginning of the 1960’s the obligatory schooling became compulsory also for the children with roma background. Earlier it was no matter of course that these children got a place in the school. Today, as the last 40 years, these pupils have a high grade of absence, which is a worry for us who work in the school. Regarding the high grade of absence among the roma pupils I found it interesting to interview some roma parents to find out their attitude to school and education. My interviews shows that the roma, who have been pupils in the Swedish school, rarely have made justice to themselves in their studies. Their schooling has been bordered with shirk and a slack attitude with bad results and unemployment as result. Now they are parents and are supposed to influence their children to complete their schooling. Many times it is difficult while the parents have no schooltradition as a ground for the arguing. My investigation has given as a result the knowledge that the roma parents realize the importance of education and urge the help from the school to motivate the roma pupils to increase their grade of presence.
