2005 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

In this study explorative working method in mathematics in upper secondary school is examined. The purpose of this study is to show how the teachers think about explorative working method in mathematical education. The study also wants to find out in which part of the school mathematics, teachers use this method and which the advantages and disadvantages are when this method is used. There are also factors which influence and confine the usage of this method in the mathematical education and these factors are examined in my work. The theory and research which are related to the explorative working method in mathematical education are introduced. Qualitative method is used in the study and ten teachers are interviewed. The results of the interviews are presented and discussed. The majority of the teachers think that usage of the explorative working method increases student’s motivation to study mathematics and understanding of mathematics. Beside that, using this method and working in the groups, students acquire the experience of the team work and solidarity. On the other hand, some of the students are used to work with books and they need some time to adjust to the other working method. The students and the teacher must take care of the students which are absent. The most important factors which restrict usage of this method are connected with economy. This method demands space to place material which is needed for exercises, time to develop suitable exercises and resources to purchase material. At the end of the study some conclusions are given.
